In the early days of Viagra being approved as the only prescription medicine to cure men’s impotence, it gained over 90% of the market share for ED pills around the world. But after more than thirty years since Viagra first came to be known as Pfizer’s vitamin V, there have been other erectile dysfunction pill variants offering the same treatment in slightly different ways.

Erectile dysfunction or impotence in men is a sexual health condition characterized by a difficulty in getting erection and maintaining erection for sex. It tends to be common among men that it’s been said all men at some point in their lives will experience erectile dysfunction. But only when it is a recurring condition does it ever become a problem and often an underlying symptom of a more serious health condition.

Causes of erectile dysfunction also range from physical factors like hormonal imbalance, age, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and side effects from medications, to psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and relational conflicts, to name a few. And Viagra proves to be just one of the many ED pills in the market that eases and temporarily treats erectile dysfunction.

Regardless of how popular Viagra seems that it may be mistaken for a sexual enhancer drug, luring even men who do not have erectile dysfunction to try it, Viagra is a medical treatment for erectile dysfunction. Therefore, access to erectile dysfunction pills such as Viagra necessitates a doctor’s prescription, and one must be diagnosed with erectile dysfunction for this to be safe to use.

Pfizer’s vitamin V is not necessarily cheap for men to maintain on a regular basis, and this paved an opportunity for the erectile dysfunction pill market to grow through the years. After more than 30 years of Viagra’s dominance in the ED pill market, you can now find plenty of Viagra alternatives that are equally safe, reliable, and effective.

Can you get over-the-counter Viagra?

Men needing help with erection tends to be quite common, especially when they hit their 40’s. Age and the natural decline of the male sex hormone testosterone often cause erectile dysfunction to become an inevitable part of a man’s life.

That’s not to say that it is normal, nor should it be tolerated, nor should one resign to just living with it. Men with erectile dysfunction have several alternatives to address their condition. And in most cases, erectile dysfunction remains treatable.

Viagra, though the most popular erectile dysfunction pill in the market today, is not on its own. There are known alternatives to Viagra, both branded ones and generic versions.

Most men would prefer to get over-the-counter ED pills due to the associated discomfort of seeking consultation from a doctor and getting checked up for their condition. However, any sort of approved medical erectile dysfunction pill has never been made available to just anyone to buy over-the-counter in the United States. All approved erectile dysfunction pills in the market like Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra, can only be purchased by men with a medical prescription. This is to ensure the safe regulation and distribution of ED pills to men who have been diagnosed with ED.

Erectile dysfunction pills are essentially phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE-5) drugs that work to improve the penile blood flow when sexually aroused, creating harder and lasting erections in men with erectile dysfunction. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remains to uphold a strict regulation of ED pills, including Viagra and all the other branded and generic versions of the drugs.

Viagra alternatives for ED

Other than Viagra, there are other alternatives that work just like it. When you consult with a healthcare professional about erectile dysfunction, they would typically prescribe one of these to you, depending on your medical history and any other health conditions you may have. Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE-5) drugs generally work the same way . It enhances blood flow to the penis to support longer-lasting erection. However, there are slight differences among them as well. And the prescription given to any ED patient is mostly based on that.

Sildenafil

Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in Viagra. The drug may be purchased in its generic form and it goes by the name, Sildenafil. Viagra works exactly the same way as generic Sildenafil, and vice-versa. They only differ essentially in brand name and how much they cost. Sildenafil is a lot cheaper, due to it being the generic brand. Sildenafil needs to be taken at least 30 to 60 minutes before intended sexual activity. It appears to be very effective for up to 80% of the male population. Both drugs work to enhance blood flow to the penis when a man is sexually aroused, causing erection and supporting it to last longer. With Sildenafil, you can expect erections to last 4 up to 6 hours.

Cialis (Tadalafil)

Cialis is another branded medicine which is the same as Tadalafil. Tadalafil works to target the enzyme PDE5, like Sildenafil, only that its effect on erection lasts much longer at 36 hours. Others would call it the “weekend pill” as it is ideal for more spontaneous sexual activities lasting for more than 1 day. At other times, Cialis may work faster than other ED pills, for as fast as 30 minutes. If you prefer the unbranded version, you may go for Tadalafil, which is cheaper.

Levitra (Vardenafil)

Vardenafil is another PDE-5 inhibitor drug that works like Tadalafil and Sildenafil. Like the rest, it should never be taken more than once a day. Its branded versions are Levitra and Staxyn, which are expected to cost more than the generic drug, Vardenafil. Staxyn is taken by mouth and should dissolve on the tongue without water, while Levitra which needs to be taken with water, like all the others.

Spedra (Avanafil)

Avanafil is a PDE-5 inhibitor drug that has also been approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It works similarly as the rest, although it is believed to be the least effective compared to Tadalafil and Sildenafil. Spedra and Stendra are branded medications of the same kind (Avanafil). The advantage with Avanafil is that it can work faster than all the others. It may be taken within 15 to 30 minutes before intended sexual activity.
